Middle East respiratory syndrome is a respiratory infection disease, which is caused by Middle East respiratory syndrome virus. The dromedary camel is the natural host of this virus and an important source of human infection with this virus.
According to reports, the UAE reported this case to WHO on July 10th. The 28-year-old male patient was admitted to the hospital on June 8, and was infected with Middle East Respiratory Syndrome virus on June 23. He had no direct or indirect contact with dromedaries, goats or sheep. Authorities have monitored 108 contacts and no second case has been found.
According to WHO data, since 2012, the total number of confirmed cases of Middle East respiratory syndrome reported globally is 2,605, including 936 deaths. Most cases occurred in Arabian Peninsula countries, and South Korea also broke out the Middle East respiratory syndrome epidemic in 2015.
WHO reminds countries to pay attention to monitoring acute respiratory infections, including Middle East respiratory syndrome. At present, WHO does not recommend special screening for Middle East respiratory syndrome at the port of entry due to the above cases, nor does it recommend any travel or trade restrictions.
